What would people do if a man got an erection in public back in the 19th century?

Way back in the days of Jane Austen, you couldn't even be alone with a member of the opposite sex, let alone do anything openly sexual in public. What would happen if a dude just pitched a tent in his thin trousers while sipping tea in the parlor? Would the clueless women even know what was happening? Would the "gentleman" be so embarrassed that he'd have to flee the house and never return?

Personally, I like to think that a man like Mr. Darcy would never be aroused by anything other than myself so he would never have that problem.

Do you ever think about that?
